Synthetic diamond

Synthetic diamond

Le synthetic diamond is a laboratory-created precious stone with the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds extracted from the earth. Unlike natural diamonds, which are formed over millions of years under specific geological conditions, synthetic diamonds are produced in a matter of weeks using advanced technologies. These artificial gems are gaining in popularity, particularly in the field of luxury jewelleryThanks to their exceptional quality and reduced environmental impact.

The process of creating synthetic diamonds

There are two main methods for creating synthetic diamonds: the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) method and the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) method.

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

The HPHT method imitates the extreme pressure and temperature conditions found in the Earth's crust. A small piece of carbon is placed in a press where it is subjected to pressures of 5 to 6 gigapascals and temperatures of 1,300 to 1,600 degrees Celsius. Under these conditions, the carbon crystallises to form a diamond. This process produces large, high-quality diamonds.

Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD)

The CVD method is a more modern technique that uses a mixture of carbon-containing gases, such as methane, introduced into a vacuum chamber. The gas is then activated by an energy source, usually microwaves, to form a plasma. The carbon atoms are slowly deposited on a diamond "seed", layer by layer, allowing a synthetic diamond to grow. This method is particularly popular for its ability to produce diamonds with fewer inclusions and exceptional optical properties.

Advantages of synthetic diamonds

The synthetic diamonds offer several advantages over natural diamonds:

  • Ethics and sustainability : The creation of synthetic diamonds does not involve any mines destructive to the environment and human exploitation.
  • Top quality : Synthetic diamonds can be produced with fewer inclusions and defects, which often makes them more brilliant and purer than their natural counterparts.
  • Cost : In general, synthetic diamonds are less expensive than natural diamonds of comparable quality, making luxury more accessible.

Applications in luxury jewellery

The synthetic diamonds are increasingly finding their place in the luxury jewellery. They are used in a variety of rooms, ranging from rings engagement rings to necklaces and bracelets. Thanks to their quality and relatively low cost, they allow jewellery designers to innovate and come up with bold designs without compromising on quality.

Frequently asked questions about synthetic diamonds

What is the difference between a synthetic diamond and a natural diamond?

The synthetic diamonds and natural diamonds have the same chemical composition and physical properties. The main difference lies in their origin: natural diamonds form naturally over millions of years, while synthetic diamonds are created in the laboratory in a matter of weeks.

Are synthetic diamonds of inferior quality?

No, the synthetic diamonds can be of equal or even superior quality to natural diamonds. They can be produced with fewer inclusions and defects, which often makes them more brilliant and purer.

How can you recognise a synthetic diamond?

It is very difficult to distinguish between a synthetic diamond of a natural diamond to the naked eye. Specialised tests, often carried out by professional gemologists, are required to identify their origin. These tests include spectroscopic analysis and examination under the microscope.

Are synthetic diamonds cheaper?

Yes, in general synthetic diamonds are less expensive than natural diamonds of comparable quality. This is due to the fact that these stones can be produced in the laboratory in a more controlled way and in less time.
