Alloy

Alloy

An alloy refers to a mixture of several chemical elements, the main component of which is a metal. Alloys are used to improve the properties of pure metals, which often have relatively poor mechanical properties. By adding other elements, it is possible to harden the metal, increase its corrosion resistance, improve its castability and modify other chemical and mechanical properties. The added elements are called "alloying elements" and impurities are unwanted elements present in the alloy. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia) (Futura Sciences).

Types of alloys :

  • Ferrous alloys : Include iron as the main element. Examples: steel, cast iron.
  • Non-ferrous alloys : Do not include iron as the main element. Examples: brass (copper and zinc), bronze (copper and tin), aluminium and its alloys.

Properties of alloys :

  • Hardening : By adding elements, metals become harder and more resistant.
  • Corrosion resistance : Some alloys are designed to withstand corrosive environments.
  • Ductility : Ability of the alloy to be stretched without breaking.
  • Flowability : Ability to be cast in moulds to make complex parts.

Common applications:

  • Jewellery : Alloys such as 18-carat gold, platinum and brass are used to create robust, aesthetically pleasing jewellery.
  • Industry: Alloys used in the manufacture of mechanical, aeronautical and electronic parts.

Frequently asked questions :

  1. What is an alloy?
    • An alloy is a mixture of two or more chemical elements, the main one being a metal, to improve its properties.
  2. What are the most common types of alloy?
    • Ferrous alloys (such as steel and cast iron) and non-ferrous alloys (such as bronze and brass).
  3. Why are alloys used in jewellery?
    • Alloys can be used to create jewellery that is durable, corrosion-resistant and aesthetically varied.
